Solar eclipse will be one of century’s best in Palm Springs area

A celestial show is in store for the Coachella Valley on Sunday as the moon slides in front of the sun in rare fashion.

The continental U.S. hasn’t seen a “ring of fire” eclipse since 1994, and Sunday’s will be one of the best eclipses visible from the valley this century, a local astronomer said.

Sunday evening, a swath of the country — including spots in Northern California — will see a bright halo of light as the moon blocks out most of the sun.

A partial eclipse visible locally will begin at 5:26 p.m.
When the eclipse peaks at 6:39 p.m., the moon will cover about 80 percent of the sun’s area. Valley residents won’t see more of the sun blocked by the moon until 2044.

Sunday’s show will take place as the sun sinks toward the horizon between west and northwest.
